Facebook Is About To Get Filtered

The social network announced Monday that it is buying photo-sharing service Instagram, a two year-old San Francisco based company that has attracted more than 30 million users, for a $ 1 billion in a cash and stock deal.

The deal marks an attempt by Facebook to maintain dominance in an area that has proved one of its stickiest and most popular features: photo sharing. At the end of the last year, Facebook users were uploading more than 250 million photos a day, on average, according to Facebook’s filling with the SEC. The social network’s members also spend nearly a fith of their time on the site browing photos, a 2011 comScore study found.

Instagram has, in just two short years, developed an offering that has proved attractive and compelling to a diverse group of users, and Facebook no doubt hopes to capitalize on the photo sharing app’s expertise, particularly in mobile.

In an update posted on his Facebook profile, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained that the talented team at Instagram will be joining Facebook to help the social network add new features to its photo-sharing offerings.

For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family, the Facebook CEO explained. Now, we’ll be able to wrok even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people basaed on your interests.

Zuckerberg also wrote, We will try to learn from Instagram’s experience to buid similar features into our other products. At the same time, we will try to help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook’s strong engineering team and infrastructure.

iPhone 5 latest rumours from fixmyiphone

Rumours surfaced today claiming Texas Instruments has started producing power management chips for the next iPhone due out in September.

Texas Instruments already supplies a number of component for Apple including the touchscreen controller and power management chips in the iPhone 4s. The company also produces a control device found in the new iPad. According to RepairLabs blog, their source claims the company’s management is referring to the next iPhone as the iPhone 5.

A separate Chinese source clams the next iPhone will be ready for a September release as well as feature a larger display. RepairLabs isn’t a proven source for Apple rumours, but they did post pictures of the new iPad’s back casing in February,
And claim the second batch of rumours come from the same Chinese source.

Expect rumours regarding all things iPhone to pick up between now and the middle of summer. If Apple’s announcement schedule hold true, the company wont’ release a new iPhone until this fall, and will announce the device a few weeks before. Apple’s announcements no longer revolve around the WWDC and as such this summer could be rather barren in terms of major announcements outside of MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and iMac updates.

New iPad 3 Released

Apple has officially unveiled the long awaited new Apple iPad 3 release date with the third-generation iOS tablet to hit UK stores on March 16th.

Set to be released just nine days after its first public appearance the iPad 2 replacement, set to be known solely as the ‘the new iPad’, will launch in a number of regions next week with US and UK iPad release date confirmed for March 16th.

Following the trend set by last year’s iPad 2 launch and living up to a number of rumours, Apple has revealed that the eagerly awaited iPad 3 UK release date will take place less than two weeks after its formal unveiling with the tablet to land boasting retina display and quad-core processor.

With iPad 3 pre-orders open now via the official Apple online store, the third-generation tablet will touch down the same day the Cupertino based company officially opens new retail stores in Houston, Texas and London’s iconic department store Harrods.

iPad 3 release date

The iPad 3 release date looks set for March or April 2012, with an iPad 3 announcement in March to coincide with the release of iOS 5.1.

Website YourDailyMac has unearthed iOS 5.1 carrier porfiles which carry the possible iPad 3 release date of 9 March 2012 in their names.

However, we’d expect the iPad 3 announcement to be in February, with the iPad 3 US release date in early March and the iPad 3 UK release date in late March.

Apple news site iMore says the announcement will be 7 March, citing sources, which have proved reliable in the past, have confirmed the date ahead of any official announcement from Cupertino.

Digitimes reported in late November 2011 that panel makers had already started shipping panels for the new iPad 3, a million in October and two million in November.

Foxconn, Apple’s major manufacturing partner, is said to have started production of the iPad 3 in January 2012. A Source at one of Apple’s partners also told Bloomberg also stated that the company began production of the iPad 3 in January, with a view to reaching full volumes in February.

Digitimes says the new model is expected to meet the heady heights of 9.5 to 9.8 million units over the course of Q1 2012.

iPhone 5 ready for production

Many Apple fans were disappointed when the company introduced the iPhone 4s in October last year; many hoped that Apple would have announced a redesigned iPhone 5. Many sources close to Apple later confirmed, that the original plan was to launch the iPhone 5 last year, but that the developers ran out of time. This also explained the late launch of the iPhone 4S. This year we can be sure that Apple will come with a new redesigned iPhone, with some major changes compared to the transition from the iPhone 4 to iPhone 4S. Sources close to Apple and their manufacturing plant Foxconn have confirmed that Foxconn is already preparing themselves for the production of the iPhone 5. The new iPhone is likely to have a larger 4-inch display, probably supplied by LG.

The source also confirmed that there is some changes in the design, the casing of the iPhone 5 clearly differ from the current models. While Steve Jobs said that the current display size of the iPhone 5 is perfect, it is very likely that the next-generation iPhone will be equipped with a larger display. We expect that Apple will announce the device during the WWDC this year, when taking a look at the calendar it is likely that the WWDC will take place from 10 to 15 June in the Moscone Centre ( San Francisco ).

Microsoft Under Fire For Avoid the Ghetto App

Microsoft is under fire this week over a patent it was granted thats been dubbed the avoid ghetto feature for GPS devices. The new feature is meant to help pedestrians avoid unsafe neighbourhoods, bad weather and difficult terrain by taking information from maps, weather reports, crime statistics and demographics, and creating directions that, according to the patent, take “the user through neighbourhoods with violent crime statics below a certain threshold.

The word guetto doesn’t actually appear anywhere in Microsoft’s Pedestrian Route Production patent, but a slew of headlines touting the incendiary avoid ghetto nickname have generated outrage. Some say the feature is racist, while others say it’s simply the next step in GPS technology.

iMessage review

Apple’s new iOS 5 software is out now and will include the new iMessage feature, an application which allows iPhone users to send texts and multimedia messages without being charged.
This new feature is quite similar to RIM’s Blackberry Messenger, better known as BBM, which allows Blackberry owners to communicate via text fee free. And couldn’t have come out at a better time after a disastrous down time from blackberry this week.
iMessage allows users to freely send messages, texts, images, videos, a location and contact information over the device’s data connection.
Unlike SMS texts being sent through the cell phone’s voice connection, iMessage allows the user to avoid being charged fees by utilizing the data plan and counting the bytes against the bill rather than against an SMS limit.
The new iMessage feature is built into the existing Messages app which makes it convenient to use and will avoid users needing new instructions to learn how to send a free text.
It was implemented to compete with the Blackberry, whose only advantage over the iPhone in recent years has been this type of messaging system.
